Steve Scalise will not be attending Biden’s first address to Congress
The House Minority Whip will miss President Biden’s first joint address to Congress due to COVID capacity limits in the Capitol.
House Republican Whip Steve Scalise will instead give his ticket for the upcoming speech to a freshman Republican lawmaker instead.
Biden’s first speech to a joint session of Congress will be smaller than usual, with around 200 seats expected to be available due to COVID restrictions.
Members of Congress will also be prohibited from inviting guests to the address.
“In the end, what he says is going to be important,” Scalise said, providing insights into his thoughts ahead of Biden’s first address. “And I hope his speech is more focused on unifying as opposed to just having a go-it-alone strategy where they continue to shut Republicans out of the process, even though he promised he would work with everybody, because he's yet to do that.”
