Rep. Vernon Jones Weighing Primary Challenge to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp

The outspoken-pro Trump State Representative tweeted he was considering a challenge to embattled Governor Brian Kemp Monday afternoon.

Firebrand Republican Georgia State Representative Vernon Jones sparked a Twitter storm on Monday when he tweeted interest in potentially running for Georgia’s governor seat.

“If it weren’t for Brian Kemp, Donald Trump would still be President of these United States.” Jones said in a statement released on Twitter.

“We need courageous conservatives leading our state, not those afraid to stand up to the Radical Left” the Governor tweeted.

Jones would be set to face incumbent Governor Brian Kemp, who was first elected to the office in 2018, in the Republican primary.

Kemp has been the subject of harsh criticism due to his handling of the 2020 election in Georgia.

President Trump repeatedly blasted Kemp, calling on him to resign and referring to Kemp as, “a complete disaster…” and added that, “nobody can be this stupid.”

Jones made headlines when he became the first state elected Democrat in Georgia to endorse President Trump’s re-election campaign.

“It’s very simple to me. President Trump’s handling of the economy, his support for historically black colleges and his criminal justice initiatives drew me to endorse his campaign.”

He would later address the 2020 Republican National Convention in support of Donald Trump’s re-election.

Representative Jones formally announced he was changing his party affiliation to Republican earlier in 2021.
