New Mexico Democratic Leaders Plead with Biden to Stop Federal Ban on New Oil and Gas Permits
New Mexico’s two Democratic Senators and its Democratic governor are pleading with Biden to stop his ban on oil and gas exploration on federal lands in states, including New Mexico.
President Joe Biden promised unity when he ran for office, but he’s facing pushback even from the left-wing of his own party, who say his ban on new oil and gas permits on federal lands will harm the New Mexico economy.
“New Mexico’s Democratic Governor is pushing for her state to get a waiver from the Biden administration’s pause on new oil and gas leasing on federal lands,” Michelle Lujan-Grisham told a local Chamber of Commerce last week, according to Reuters.
Lujan-Grisham is not the only one to plead with Biden to stop his executive order which banned new permits on federal lands for oil and gas leasing. Over half of the most productive acreage in New Mexico is covered by the temporary (at least for now) ban on new permits, according to the Institute for Energy Research.
“Oil and gas workers and communities they live in have helped build our nation for more than a century, and revenues from mineral production have supported New Mexico’s educational system and state budget,” U.S. Democratic Senators Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan told the White House recently, according to the Carlsbad Current-Argus.
Both, ironically, support Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ job-killing Green New Deal.
They are now begging with the Department of Interior, which could possibly be led soon by Representative Deb Haaland, herself a New Mexico Democrat, to end the disastrous executive order.
Haaland is set Monday to be approved as the Interior Secretary and is also a staunch supporter of the Green New Deal.
