REPORT: Feds had backup plan to arrest Derek Chauvin in court if jury acquitted him
Biden Justice Department officials had reportedly prepared a secret ‘contingency plan’ to arrest Derek Chauvin on federal police charges if a jury had found him not guilty, according to a new report.
Sources told the Star Tribune that if the officer had been acquitted on all charges, or if a mistrial had been declared, he would have been arrested at the courthouse.
The Star Tribune report claimed the US Attorney’s Officer would have reportedly hit Chauvin with a criminal complaint, arrested him on the spot, and then called for a grand jury indictment.
It’s important to note that these claims have been made by anonymous sources.
Chauvin, of course, was found guilty on all three charges and the officer was immediately taken into police custody and transferred to a maximum security prison until he is sentenced.
The Star Tribune alleges that federal officers spent months and countless hours gathering evidence to build a case against Chauvin, and are planning to ask a grand jury to indict him and the other three former officers involved on “civil rights violations.”
The three other police officers in question, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane, and J Alexander Kueng were present when Floyd died. The officers all face charges for allegedly aiding and abetting Chauvin.
TheStar Tribune said that prosecutors also want to indict Chauvin on charges relating to a 2017 incident as well. The federal case will reportedly be prosecuted by Justice Department attorneys in Minnesota and Washington, DC.
