Man Facing Up to Six Months in UK Prison for Alleged ‘Offensive’ Tweet

A Scottish man is reportedly facing up to six months in prison after police arrested him for a tweet pertaining to the death of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

The 35-year-old man was arrested by Scottish police on Monday after a report was received a report about a tweet that was deemed to be “offensive” The Independent reported.

Captain Tom Moore was a World War II veteran who had raised millions to help COVID-19 patients and British workers by holding charity walks in his garden. Moore died on February 1st due to complications from COVID-19.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson Tweeted out a video of support for Captain Moore which can be seen below.

The suspect has been reportedly charged with a crime under the communications act in Britain which makes sending messages of “grossly offensive or of an indecent character” illegal.

It’s unclear what the tweet said regarding Captain Moore and it’s uncertain what prompted the arrest.

If convicted, the man faces up to six months in jail or a fine of £5,000 — or even potentially both.
