DOJ Files Show That Facebook May Have Downplayed Their Platform's Role In Capitol Riots

According to files by the Justice Department on individuals involved in the Capitol riots, Facebook may have downplayed how significant of a role their platform had in references to that day.

According to the files, 73 of the individuals involved in the riots mentioned the “Stop the Steal” rally or storming the Capitol on their Facebook page. YouTube had 24 references, Instagram had 20, and Parler, which was taken offline after the riots, only had 8.

Among the references on Facebook to the rally and Capitol riots were multiple live streams at the scene and Facebook posts announcing individuals intentions of going to Washington D.C. on January 6.

This data disproves Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg’s statement that the social media platform had no role in instigating the riots.
