Texas Democrats Stand with Party Chair Who Called Senator Tim Scott an “Oreo”
The Lamar County Democratic Party refused to accept Chairman Gary O’Connor’s resignation after his racially divisive comments towards the black Republican Senator.
After acknowledging he had “embarrassed myself and my party,” the potentially racist Democrat party chairman had his resignation rejected by the Tarrant County Democratic Party.
“Lamar County Democrats recommit ourselves to conduct our private conversations and our public social media discussions with anti-racist, pro-reconciling attitudes and language,” the party said in a statement to The Texas Tribune.
O’Connor, a white man, made the alleged racist comments directed towards black GOP Senator Tim Scott after delivering the Republican response to Joe Biden’s address to a joint session of Congress last week.
Prominent Texas Republicans, including Governor Greg Abbott, were quick to condemn the racist remarks and demand accountability.
In the now-deleted Facebook post, O’Connor said “I had hoped that Scott might show some common sense, but it seems clear he is little more than an oreo with no real principles.”
The Republican Senator appeared on Fox & Friends to offer his thoughts on the remarks last week.
“They are not going to attack my policies. They are literally attacking the color of my skin. You cannot step out of your lane according to the liberal elite left,” Scott said.
