Ohio GOP Censures Rep Anthony Gonzalez Over Trump Impeachment Vote
The resolution passed also calls on other pro-impeachment “Republicans” to resign, including Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.
Mere months after Ohio Congressman Anthony Gonzalez sided with Democrats to impeach President Donald J. Trump, his own state Republican party has passed a resolution calling on him to resign.
The resolution accuses Rep. Gonzalez of “knowingly and willfully” violating his oath of office. The full resolution can be seen below.
Gonzalez recently sided with Rep. Liz Cheney in the fight to oust her as Chair of the House Republican Conference saying that “if a prerequisite for leading our conference is continuing to lie to our voters, then Liz Cheney is not the best fit.”
Unsurprisingly, Democrats and members of the press were quick to rally around the anti-Trump “Republican”, including the managing editor of the failing Columbus Dispatch, Rachel Larimore.
Gonzalez is being challenged by former Trump staffer Max Miller, along with several other candidates who are expected to run for the seat. Miller was endorsed by President Trump in February.
The race is expected to be one of the most contentious Republican primaries of the 2022 election cycle.
At the time of Representative Anthony Gonzalez’s vote, former Ohio State Party Chair and now establishment Ohio US Senate Candidate Jane Timken called the decision, “rational.”
Josh Mandel, the first statewide elected official in Ohio to endorse President Trump, called the former establishment Ohio Party Chair out for “failing to censure Gonzalez” during her time as Chair.
Should Congressman Gonzalez resign for siding with Democrats and against President Trump? Should the Ohio GOP have censured Gonzalez earlier? Share your thoughts below!
