Senator Mitch McConnell Supports Judge Merrick Garland for Attorney General
The Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced that he would vote in favor of Merrick Garland to run President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice as the Attorney General.
McConnell was asked by POLITICO Tuesday afternoon if he supported Garland and the Kentucky Senator briefly and assertively stated, “I do.”
McConnell most notably declined to consider Garland’s nomination for the Supreme Court by President Obama in 2016. The then Senate Majority Leader argued that the next President should decide who fills the seat. Scalia’s vacant seat was eventually filled by Justice Neil Gorsuch.
As Garland heads into next week’s final vote for his confirmation, it appears there will be bi-partisan support for him becoming the next Attorney General of the United States barring any unforeseen circumstances arising.
Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin said he is hoping for final confirmation next week.
Garland is currently a judge for the DC Circuit Court of Appeals where he served as Chief Judge.
Judge Merrick Garland made headlines earlier in the week when he told Senator Josh Hawley that Antifa rioting US Courthouse buildings was not terrorism because it occurred at night while court was not in session.
