President Biden Orders Military Strikes in Eastern Syria

Joe Biden ordered his first military airstrikes as President of the United States on Thursday, targeting “multiple facilities” that were being used by Iranian backed groups in eastern Syria — according to the Pentagon.

The military strikes were in response to recent attacks against US coalition personnel in Iraq and to thwart additional ongoing threats being presented.

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby released a statement Thursday evening about the strikes:

These strikes were authorized in response to recent attacks against American and Coalition personnel in Iraq, and to ongoing threats to those personnel. Specifically, the strikes destroyed multiple facilities located at a border control point used by a number of Iranian-backed militant groups, including Kait’ib Hezbollah (KH) and Kait’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada (KSS).

The operation sends an unambiguous message: President Biden will act to protect American and Coalition personnel. At the same time, we have acted in a deliberate manner that aims to de-escalate the overall situation in both eastern Syria and Iraq.

The airstrikes were described as being “defensive precision” strikes.

The Washington Post reported that the strike is believed to have killed “up to a handful of people.”

Biden’s first airstrike comes just a little over a month into his presidency.

The newly minted leader has already signed into action over 60 executive orders/actions since taking office in January, the most of any US President in that period of time.

Conservatives were quick to dig up an old tweet from White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki condemning air strikes in Syria citing that they are a “sovereign country” in 2017.
