Senators Manchin, Collins, & Romney All Plan to Vote Against Neera Tanden, Biden Nomination to Head WH Budget Office
The White House nomination of Neera Tanden to head up the Office of Management and Budget is in danger of failing with Senators Susan Collins (R-MN), Joe Manchin (D-WV), and Mitt Romney (R-UT) all signaling Monday that they would be voting against the controversial nominee.
The opposition to Tanden’s confirmation stems from controversial tweets against conservatives, including Senator Susan Collins.
Tanden did apologize for her past tweets stating that her, “language and my expressions on social media caused hurt to people, and I feel badly about that. And I really regret it and I recognize that it's really important for me to demonstrate that I can work with others.”
Democrat Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, said in a statement that he believed Tanden’s, “overtly partisan statements will have a toxic and detrimental impact on the important working relationship between members of Congress and the next director of the Office of Management and Budget.”
With a 50 to 50 tie in the US Senate between parties, the three centrist Senator’s decisions to vote against Tanden leaves very little wiggle room (if any) for the longtime Clinton ally to be confirmed.
It appears the Biden Administration may be forced to face the harsh reality that one of their nominations will not be confirmed by the US Senate.
Tanden would need the support of someone like Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska in order to squeak by, which does not appear to be likely.
Cabinet nominations have been a magnet for controversy over the last few decades, the last president not to have a Cabinet nominee rejected or withdrawn was Ronald Reagan.
