Kevin McCarthy Files Resolution to REMOVE Rep Eric Swalwell from House Intelligence Committee

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy filed a resolution Thursday to remove California’s Eric Swalwell from the House Intelligence Committee stating that Swalwell engaged in a “years-long” relationship with a suspected Chinese spy.

Rep McCarthy (R-CA) added that the Swalwell’s questionable conduct, “makes clear he has no place serving on the committee in charge of America's top secrets”

Background:

Towards the end of 2020, Representative Swalwell was exposed in an Axios report regarding a suspected Chinese spy who was targeting California politicians with the goal of gaining access to classified intelligence.

Axios reported specifically that,

“A suspected Chinese intelligence operative developed extensive ties with local and national politicians, including a U.S. congressman, in what U.S. officials believe was a political intelligence operation run by China’s main civilian spy agency between 2011 and 2015, Axios found in a yearlong investigation.”

The both groundbreaking and troubling article dives deep into the depths of how Beijing has attempted to infiltrate American national security including Swalwell’s continued interactions with the Fang Fang or Christina Fang -- the alleged Chinese spy.

Over the course of the following years, Rep Swalwell (D-CA) and Fang had numerous interactions, possibly of sexual nature.

Axios also reported that Fang even “took part in fundraising activity for Swalwell’s 2014 re-election campaign.”

Why It Matters

House Committee assignments have become political bargaining chips in recent years with Members of Congress losing their assignments due to behavior or actions House leadership has deemed unacceptable.

Just recently Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was stripped of all committee assignments over comments allegedly made on social media years prior to ever being elected to office.

While Representative Greene is no longer serving on her committees, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has confirmed on numerous occasions that Swalwell will remain on The US House Intelligence Committee despite calls to remove the failed 2020 Democratic Presidential candidate from his important committee post.

What’s Next

House Minority Leader Kevin Mcarthy tweeted Thursday that he filed a resolution to remove Rep. Eric Swalwell from the House Intelligence Committee.

While the Democratic led House will most likely not remove Swalwell from his committee assignments, the House GOP appears to be laying the groundwork to remove Swalwell (and potentially others) from future assignments. These plans would require the GOP to regain control after the 2022 midterm elections.
