Biden reportedly pleaded with Afghanistan president to downplay Taliban resurgence
President Biden reportedly asked Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani to try to portray defense capabilities that the country obviously did not have.
President Joe Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan continues to cause headaches for the administration. But a recent news report indicates that Biden likely knew weeks prior that there would be a collapse of the Afghani security forces.
“I need not tell you the perception around the world and in parts of Afghanistan, I believe, is that things aren’t going well in terms of the fight against the Taliban,” Biden told Ghani during a July call. Reuters released a portion of the transcript.
“And there’s a need, whether it is true or not, there is a need to project a different picture,” Biden said.
“Whether it is true or not,” are not reassuring words to hear from America’s Commander-in-Chief about a foreign situation where thousands of brave Americans were left in harm’s way.
As USA Today noted:
The Taliban quickly took over Kabul after the Afghan National Security Forces mounted little resistance, prompting Ghani to flee the country. The final U.S. troops left Afghanistan before a self-imposed Aug. 31 deadline, ending a 20-year war after a chaotic withdrawal that included the death of 13 U.S. service members and at least 169 Afghan civilians from an ISIS-K terrorist attack.
But the death of our brave troops did not seem to faze Biden, who was accused of hosting a “scripted” meeting and appeared to look at his watch while waiting for the remains of our heroes to come home.
Congresswoman Lauren Boebert even raised the possibility that Biden could face impeachment for the phone call.
