Rampant Shoplifting in San Francisco has forced Walgreens to close 17 stores
17 Walgreens locations in San Francisco have closed their doors within the last five years according to a report from the SF Chronicle.
Ten closures took place from 2019 to present day with the most recent closure taking place on March 17th.
The cause of the closures is reportedly rampant shoplifting and looting. Brendan Dugan, director of organized retail crime and corporate investigations in SF, reportedly believes that San Francisco is at the center of organized retail crime.
Lyanne Melendez, a local San Francisco news reporter for KGO-TV (ABC7) shared video footage of a robbery taking place in broad daylight in a San Francisco area Walgreens.
San Francisco has suffered in numerous ways during the COVID-19 Wuhan China pandemic. The city has even reportedly had twice as many fatal drug overdoses as coronavirus deaths. Tents of legions of homeless people lined sidewalks during the lockdowns as feces covered the streets.
However, now the city is reeling over the rampant rise of shoplifting at local store chains including Walgreens and Safeway.
With now 17 different Walgreens closing, it will be up to the city of San Francisco to decide if they want to support law and order and crack down on crime to save the remaining open businesses.
