Disney Plus Launches Marvel Series With First Female Lead Muslim Superhero
Marvel launched the popular new version of its character Ms. Marvel in 2013, which features a Muslim girl in the costume. This was the first Marvel lead Muslim superhero and now it is poised to be in a Disney Plus series.
Marvel brought us its most recent iteration of the Ms. Marvel character by granting a 16 year old Muslim teen, Kamala Khan, with special powers.
Kamala gains the ability to change her shape and size, allowing her to, among other things, punch with a very, very big fist.
The superhero was an instant hit upon introduction and has become one of the best sellers for Marvel.
The coming series is set to star newcomer Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel and will debut late 2021.
The announcement was posted on Instagram (embedded below).
Mohan Kapur, Risha Shah and Matt Lintz will all be featured as co-stars in the series.
Bisha K Ali will serve as the shows executive producer and showrunner.
Marvel previously introduced a Muslim character in 2003, in X-Men 133. “Dust” is an Afghani-born Muslim who occasionally appears in the pages of the X-Men.
Ms. Marvel is the comic giant’s first Muslim character to lead her own book, and now her own show.
