Cosby conviction overturned, Claire Huxtable defends co-star, says a “terrible wrong is being righted”
Actress Phylicia Rashad, most famously known for playing Claire Huxtable in The Cosby Show, came to the defense of her former co-star Wednesday afternoon.
“FINALLY!!!! A terrible wrong is being righted- a miscarriage of justice is corrected!” Phylicia Rashad tweeted Wednesday afternoon after Bill Cosby’s conviction was overturned in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
Cosby was released from prison Wednesday after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned his sexual assault conviction.
The 83-year old former actor and comedian was released at 2:30 PM, just about 2 hours after the PA high court issued its decision.
Cosby was released on a procedural issue rather than something related to the facts of the crimes accused of.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported:
Excerpts from Cosby’s deposition in the Constand’s civil suit were ultimately used against Cosby at trial in what the high court justices described Wednesday as a violation of his constitutional rights to due process.
When a prosecutor makes an unconditional promise of non-prosecution, and when the defendant relies upon that guarantee to the detriment of his constitutional right not to testify … our criminal justice system demands that the promise be enforced,
It’s unclear why Rashad believed a miscarriage of justice is being “corrected” given Cosby was released based on procedural issues rather than the evidence surrounding his alleged sex crimes.
Cosby is now pronounced innocent and is a free man, in part thanks to the PA Supreme Court, and Cosby’s team of lawyers.
