Famous "Remember The Titans" School Changing Name, Possibly After George Floyd or Kamala Harris
A Virginia school district is considering renaming the famous T.C. Williams High School from Remember The Titans after Kamala Harris or George Floyd.
In November of 2020 the Alexandria City Public Schools Board voted unanimously to change the school’s name because Thomas Chambliss Williams’ history as a segregationist.
After the death of George Floyd, activists within the community initiated calls to name the school after the slain Minneapolis man.
The school district released a survey that allows members from the local community to nominate new names for the high school. Included in the choices are “George Floyd Memorial High School,” “Kamala Harris High School,” and even “Megan Markle High School.”
Changing the names of buildings and historical places has become a common trend in the United States following the start of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Princeton voted to change the name of its Woodrow Wilson Public Policy school. Statues remembering famous Confederate figures have been taken down across the nation and the Confederate Flag has been banned from several major marketplaces including Amazon and Wal-Mart.
The Alexandria School district stated they would announce new names for T.C. Williams High School and Matthew Maury Elementary School by July 1st, 2021.
