Greg Abbott Backs Bill in Texas To Prohibit Social Media Companies From Censoring Texans
Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) announced that the state would be ‘taking a stand’ against big tech censorship by backing new legislation introduced to combat censorship of viewpoints.
Senate Bill 12 aims to block social media companies like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Parler from censoring viewpoints online.
Abbott added that the “First Amendment is under assault” and that the attacks on it would not be “tolerated in Texas."
The Texas governor added that he believed social media platforms were the new equivalent of the “public square.”
"Now people are going to Facebook and Twitter to talk about their political ideas," Abbott concluded.
Abbott added that the big tech platforms too often choose winners and losers in the arena of ideas and that it was not representative of America’s commitment to the free exchange of ideas.
Abbott threw his support behind Senate Bill 12 saying it “prohibits social media companies from censoring Texans" based on "viewpoints" and create an avenue for people who have been "canceled, censored or de-platformed" to seek legal action and get back online.
The popular Texas Governor stated that he would enact the bill by the end of the session should it pass through the legislature.
