Washington Post Opinion: The National Anthem Is 'Hate Being Spewed In The Name Of Patriotism'
According to former Washington Post sports columnist Mark Wise, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban made the right move to cancel the national anthem before sporting events and should have stood his ground to the NBA when they stated the anthem would be played before all games.
“Cuban had it right the first time. Like the flag before and after Jan. 6, we’ve now weaponized the ‘Star-Spangled Banner.’ Wholly supporting its continued inclusion at domestic sporting events is our new shallow-end referendum on patriotism. The anthem has already split the country,” wrote Wise.
“Organized sports have cheapened the national anthem for decades,” continued Wise. “The lyrics and the music have been co-opted by professional leagues determined to forge an unneeded alliance between sports and nationalism.”
When deciding on when to play the anthem, Wise wrote “None, really, other than at the World Cup, the Olympics and maybe a state high school or college national final. There is a silent majority out there, tired of the hate being spewed in the name of patriotism.”
