45 GOP Senators Vote to Dismiss Impeachment Trial

Forty-five Senate Republicans voted to dismiss former President Trump’s second impeachment trial. The effort was led by Senator Rand Paul (R-KY).

Five “Republican” Senators voted with the Democrat Senators to uphold the constitutionality of the impeachment trial.

  • Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT)

  • Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE)

  • Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA)

  • Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)

  • Senator Susan Collins (R-ME)

Senator Murkowski indicated she believes, "impeachment is not solely about removing a president, it is also a matter of political consequence."

Notably, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell voted with Senator Paul, even with reports leaking that McConnell blames President Trump for losing the US Senate majority.

Senator Paul did indicate that while their attempt to have the entire trial nullified failed, the votes showed that the Democrats do not have enough votes to impeach the former President once the trial does conclude.

17 Republican Senators would need to join all 50 Democrat Senators in order to convict President Trump. It appears as of right now, President Trump will most likely evade being convicted by the Senate once again.
