Philadelphia bans cops from pulling over for minor traffic violations

The new policy could potentially make the city less safe, as things like working headlights help protect pedestrians and other drivers.

Philadelphia has banned police from pulling over drivers for infractions such as broken taillights, in an effort to fight racism.

“When Philadelphia's mayor signs landmark legislation as soon as this week, the city will become the first major US city to ban police from stopping drivers for low-level traffic violations -- stops that studies show target Black drivers at disproportionately higher rates,” CNN reported.

“A goal of the Driving Equality Bill is to ease tension between police and community members by removing possibly dangerous interactions through minor traffic stops,” USA Today reported.

The bill, which can be read here, was signed on October 27.
