POLL: 1 in 6 Gen Z Adults Identify as LGBT
A new poll shows that the amount of Americans identifying as LGBTQ+ has increased from the last time this was surveyed in 2017.
Generation Z, the newest American Generation of children reaching adulthood is leading the charge, with the poll citing as many as 1 in 6 identifying with the LGBTQ+ label.
This data shows a steady increase since 2012, the first year LGBT was first tracked by the polling company. Alphonso David, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said in an interview with CNN that he wasn’t surprised, “We've always had LGBTQ people in this country, The question is whether they identify as LGBTQ -- meaning the label itself -- and whether they're comfortable publicly identifying.”
Over-half of those polled identified as bi-sexual coming in at 54.6% with 24.5% as gay, 11.7% as lesbian, and 11.3% as transgender.
After recent legislative strides made in the past few years, David said he expects more LGBT people to become transparent in their identification.
