REPORT: Biden to Announce $4 Billion in US Aid to W.H.O. COVID Vaccine Program in Foreign Countries
Reportedly President Biden plans to announce the U.S. commitment of $4 Billion for vaccines overseas on Friday during a virtual G-7 summit meeting.
The United States is set to contribute $4 billion to the World Health Organization’s “COVAX” program, to be announced by President Joe Biden on Friday. The contribution will begin with a $2 billion payment in 2021 followed by an additional $2 billion in 2022.
“We do think that it is vital to take a role in beating the pandemic globally and to really put U.S. leadership out there to do this,” a Biden administration official said. “It's critically important to surge vaccination globally…”
The COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access program (COVAX) is a WHO-backed initiative to support poorer nations’ access to COVID-19 vaccines.
The increased focus on global engagement stands in stark contrast to the Trump administration’s “America First” philosophy.
