Defund the police and you’ll lose state funding, Texas governor tells leftist cities
Texas Governor Greg Abbott supports legislation that holds back taxpayer-dollars from cities that defund the police.
When cities defund the police, the ramifications are felt not just by that particular city, but by the county and state.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has stepped in, along with Republican lawmakers, to ensure that far-left activists and Black Lives Matter cannot defund their local police departments without consequences.
“After signing a law that would prohibit cities within Texas to defund the police, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott told ‘The Faulkner Focus’ on Tuesday that Austin should face consequences for its move to cripple local law enforcement,” Fox News reported.
“Under House Bill 1900, cities that ‘defund the police’ would lose the power to annex and would be required to hold elections allowing residents of areas annexed in the previous 30 years to leave the city,” the Austin American-Statesman reported.
“Those cities also would be unable to increase property taxes or rates for city-owned utilities, and they would lose sales tax revenue equal to the amount cut from police budgets,” the Texas newspaper reported. “The diverted sales tax money would be made available to the Texas Department of Public Safety instead.”
While some may think that the governor should let cities run their own affairs, the real cost of defunding has to be absorbed by everyone.
When ANTIFA smashes glass and burns down buildings because the police have been cut, it’s state unemployment programs that have to pay to support people who lost jobs, and county police resources may be needed to investigate.
When leftists activists assault federal buildings, as has happened in Portland, state troopers may be needed to stop the violence.
Police defunding can lead to a surge in violence, as left-wing thugs use the anarchy to carry out horrific crimes.
