Disney+ Places ‘Offensive Content’ Disclaimer to The Muppet Show

According to Disney+, even The Muppets, an iconic children’s show, is now considered “offensive” in 2021.

Disney released five seasons of The Muppets on their popular streaming service on Friday, however the episodes were released with a disclaimer shown prior to each episode playing warning viewers that the content may be “offensive content.”

The disclaimer warns viewers that the show features “stereotypes” and “mistreatment of people or cultures.”

The disclaimer states that, “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now.”

Disney+ continues by adding that, “Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together, Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.”

Disney does not specifically state what is offensive in the show, however several characters do depict minorities in America. In season 5, Johnny Cash also performs in front of a confederate flag.

In addition to on The Muppets, there will be offensive content warnings placed before the popular Disney movies, The Aristocats, Dumbo, Peter Pan, and Swiss Family Robinson.
