Disney+ Filters Out Dumbo, Peter Pan and Other Classic Movies From App's ‘Kids Profile’ Mode Due to Racism

Children watching Disney+ under a ‘Kids Profile’ will no longer be able to watch Dumbo, The Aristocrats, Swiss Family Robinson, and Peter Pan because of scenes now deemed ‘racist.’

“Titles with a content advisory notice related to negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures have been excluded,” the streaming platform explained in their help center.

The films were previously flagged for their use of racial stereotypes, and now they have been completely removed from the children-friendly version of popular Disney streaming platform.

According to Disney, in Dumbo, “the crows and musical number pay homage to racist minstrel shows, where white performers with blackened faces and tattered clothing imitated and ridiculed enslaved Africans on Southern plantations.”

The Aristocats, is being criticized because of a cat that, “is depicted as a racist caricature of East Asian peoples with exaggerated stereotypical traits such as slanted eyes and buck teeth.”

Peter Pan was booted from the kid friendly version for its portrayal of “Native people in a stereotypical manner that reflects neither the diversity of Native peoples nor their authentic cultural traditions.”

Swiss Family Robinson, “the pirates who antagonize the Robinson family are portrayed as a stereotypical foreign menace,” Disney added.

“These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now,” Disney stated and “rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it, and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.”

Do you believe has gone a step too far removing the movies from their kid-friendly version of the app? Do you believe the movies promote racism or unacceptable racial stereotypes? Comment your thoughts below!
