San Francisco School Board Says Schools With Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, Feinstein, and Others Must be Removed

The San Francisco school board voted 6-1 to remove names of the schools that are named after people with “offensive histories” like Abe Lincoln, Francis Scott Key, Robert Louis Stevenson, and even the Democrat Senator Diane Feinstein.

The 6-1 vote advances the plan to rename 44 schools covering 46 campuses in San Francisco.

“This is an opportunity for our students to learn about the history of our school's names, including the potential new ones,” Board President Gabriela López said in a statement. “This resolution came to the school board in the wake of the attacks in Charlottesville, and we are working alongside the rest of the country to dismantle symbols of racism and white supremacy culture. I am excited about the ideas schools will come up with.”

Schools with the following namesakes are now subject to potential change:

  • George Washington

  • Abraham Lincoln

  • Thomas Jefferson

  • John Muir

  • Junipero Serra

  • Paul Revere

  • Francis Scott Key

  • Robert Louis Stevenson

  • Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA)

Other names not listed above were also included and are subject to change.

Including current Democrat Senator Feinstein on the list is a step further than any other name change to date — evidence of divides between factions on the left side of the political spectrum.

The resolution does not change the names or remove the names for a school or campus; it serves as the Board's commitment to replace the names.
