Congressman Matt Cartwright caught in ethics scandal over selling official office to high-level donor

Pennsylvania Congressman Matt Cartwright appeared in a television commercial for a megadonor’s law firm that ran nationwide.

Axios first reported that 10-year incumbent Congressman Matt Cartwright (D-PA) filmed a television ad in his official office for megadonor attorney Jerry Parker. Parker and his wife have been long-time max donors to Cartwright’s campaign. In the video, Cartwright is seen praising his donor’s law firm in a face-to-camera style video set in his official office while wearing his Congressional pin.

Members of Congress are strictly forbidden from using official resources to promote any commercial endeavors or endorsements. But this isn’t the first time Cartwright’s office was been hit with an ethics scandal

A copy of a letter sent from the law firm Parker Waichman to Matt Cartwright confirms that Parker Waichman’s commercial was filmed in Cartwright’s official DC office, and Cartwright’s congressional staff were aware this would be used in the future commercial.

Matt Cartwright is facing his toughest reelection bid to date. Businessman and former Trump administration official Jim Bognet nearly defeated Cartwright in 2020 and has been shown leading Cartwright according to recent polls. Bognet appeared on Northeast Pennsylvania’s WILK radio calling Cartwright an embarrassment to the area.

The Bognet campaign blasted Cartwright for his latest ethics violation in a press release seen below.
