Vietnam Veteran Killed by Chicago Carjackers in Broad Daylight

Keith Cooper, 73, the victim survived two Vietnam War combat tours while in the Marine Corps but died of a heart attack in Chicago after attempted carjackers beat him in broad daylight.

Keith Cooper, 73, died around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Hyde Park (Illinois) area after two people carjacked him while he ran errands. The thugs then repeatedly punched him in the head, witnesses did attempt to step in to try to stop the attack.

"I’m just in shock. I’m still in shock because this is not the way I thought my day was going to go," said the Vietnam Vet’s daughter, Kenika Carlton.

The victims family said Cooper’s heart couldn’t handle the trauma of the assault and he was pronounced dead at the hospital of a heart attack.

"He was like a bonus dad. He was my father-in-law, but he was like a dad," Curtis Carlton said.

Cooper was tragically killed just days before his 74th birthday and leaves behind a heroic legacy of surviving two Vietnam War combat tours while serving his country in the Marine Corps.

Chicago police have arrested two suspects in the case for questioning.

Fox News reported that, “Carjackings in Chicago have increased in recent years, with 2020 seeing a 135% spike compared to 2019, from 603 carjackings in 2019 to 1,416 in 2020.”

The crime has apparently spilled over into 2021.
